What a load of rubbish!

For 30 years, this family has to put up with the rubbish and the stench coming from thir neighbour's three room flat in Telok Blangah Rise. They have to keep their windows shut even when they are at home. They avoid going out their flat because the stemch is overpowering.

"It smells so disgusting I feel like vomiting," said Mr Leong Cheow Yeow, 80, who lives on the 13th floor of block 42. The retiree lives there with his wife, Madam Tam Ah Yuke, 74, and thier youngest son, who is in his 30s. The situation has become worse over years. They said they feared that the rubbish inside might be a fire hazard.

The New Paper visited the flat on Wednesday and found it so filled with rubbish that it was impossible to walk from one end to another. There are napkins, tins of butter cookies, empty food containers, books, old newspapers, plastic bags andeven sachets of 3-in-1 coffee mix lying around. They are piles that reach almost to the top of the ceiling of the flat, and the floor cannot be seen. Several of the flat's window panes are broken, and there are flies buzzing around. A foul smell hung think in the air.

The front door is held shut only by a piece of raffia string. The owner of the flat wasn't in. But according to Mr Leong, she is a woman in her 40s who livd there for about 20 years. She comes back three time a week. Mr Leong claimed that whenever the woman returns to the flat, she asks him for $10 to buy food. "I always give it to her because she looks so poor, with nobody to take pity on her," said Mr Leong. He added that she thanked him in return, and often said "God Bless You" to him.

My opinion:

I think the woman should have not accumulate rubbish in her flat. By doing this, she is being an inconsiderate and unhygenic neighbour. She should sell all her rubbish to the rag-and-bone man, so she could have money to buy food eat instead of asking Mr Leong for money.

But, I'm also glad that Mr Leong was willing to give the lady money. I think that he had done a right thing. If not the lady, would be starving to death.

Holiday News Article 1

14 signed up for casino ban by their families

A part-time student, who is not even 21, is already on the run from loan sharks, having owned them " Tens of Thousands of dollars". The student, who bet on all sorts of games, started gambling in his teens and his parents could not do anything to stop him, said Tanjong Pagar Family Service Centre ( FSC ) senior counsellor Charles Lee.

The student is one of the 14 people whose families have applied for them to be barred from the two casinos here which is currently still under construction. In the two months since families can apply their loved ones banned from gambling tables, close to 80 people have made enquiries with the Tanjong Pagar FSC on such " family exclusion orders " However, only 14 families have gone beyond enquiring about these orders to sitting through interviews with counsellors to share how the gambler's actions have hurt them, before such exclusion orders are issued.

Most of the 14 gamblers are chinese, male and aged between 31 and 60. Also, most of them hold at least O-level or higher qualifications. However, about half of them earn nothing at all or less than $500 a month.

Of the 14 gamblers, many of whom have been gambling for the past 20 or more years, not all were dragged screaming by their wives and other family members to see Mr Lee and his colleagues. Some like the soon-to-turn 21 year old youth, came willingly with their loved ones, said Mr Lee.

My opinions:

I think that the gamblers' families have done a right to ban their loved ones from the casino. If not, the gamblers would start to gamble uncontrollingly, soon, they would end up being bankrupt or depressed because of the lost of their money. As family members of the gamblers, they must help them get rid off the bad habit of gambling. By consulting Mr Lee and his colleagues, they not only help the gamblers to get rid of the bad habit, but also help them realise that they have such a caring famliy.

Therefore, I'm very grateful to such councils like the Tanjong Pagar FSC and also the National Council on Problem Gambling as they have helped many families help their loved ones get over gambling and live a better life.

I'm also glad that the 21 year old student was willing to turn over a new leaf and consult Mr Lee with his family.

WORDBANK REVIEW ( WEEK 4 )

News:

1) Husband of Singaporean hostage Lo Hwei Yen killed in the Mumbai attacks, Michael
Puhaindran gave an insight into the 28 year old.

I think her husband is doing the right thing as the brave singaporean faced many
fearful moments being a hostage, yet, cared to call her husband and tell him that she loved him very much and send an email to her family and friends that if she did not make it out there, she will always love them.

2) A 23 year old Chinese National, Wang Zhong, has been fined $19,000 for smuggling cigarettes through parcel post.

I think that fining him is a right thing to do because he had done an illegal act by smuggling cigarettes. In fact, they should not have invented cigarettes as it is bad for our health. The goverment had spent much money on promoting a smoke-free enviroment, too bad that the cigarettes has drugs that make the smoker addicted to it, making it a problem for promoting smoke-free enviroments.

Wordbank Review ( WEEK 3 )

News Review:

1) A man was killed in a clash between pro- and anti-goverment supporters in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai, shortly after the prime minister arrived in the the city.

I think the anti-goverment supporters were foolish to support for anti goverment. Without a goverment, the nation would be out of control as the goverments are the ones who makes the right choices for the nation to run smoothly. And they should not result to violence to solve this problem. They should think about what they are doing as it is affecting tourists to think that Thailand is not a safe destination for a holiday after the anti-goverment took over Thailand's Airport. The police should also do something to stop this protest too.

2)6 men have been arrested for suspected invloement in loansharking activities, police conducted an islandwide operation on loanshark syndicates.

I think the six men were doing the wrong thing. They sholud not be loansharks. They know by doing this is against the law but they still wanted to be loansharks. They should not be loansharks and obey the law, by doing this they will notbe arrested. I also think that the police is doing the right thing to operate an islandwide operation on loanshark syndicates because the loansharks should be arrested after doing many illegal things like loaning money ilegally, beating people up and even drug trafficking.

Wordbank Review ( WEEK 2)

News Review:

1)The Singapore Zoo is keeping its white tiger exhibit closed for a few more days to monitor the tiger's stress levels which were involved in last thursday's incident where a cleaner was eaten to death.

I think the zookeepers are doing the right thing by closing the exhibit and monitoring the tigers because the tigers may have stress and resulted by eating the cleaner and by closing the exhibit, the tigers will not harm anymore visitors or staff. The cleaner also should not have decide to commit suicide in the tigers exihibit as he had damaged the reputation of the Singapore Zoo by being eaten by the tigers which may cause some visitors to think that the Singapore Zoo is not a safe place to visit. Instead, he should be having the courage to live on his life and face the challenges in life.

2)On Febuary 22 next year, Singapore's first mass cycling event on public roads aims to attract 5,000 people. It will also be the first time an event will include both amateur and elite cyclists.

I think organising this event is a great way to promote a healthy living lifestyle. They are also including amateur cyclists which is a good thing because it is a chance for the amateur cyclists to practice long distance cycling. Also, organsing this event on public roads may cause traffic jams in some areas. I suggest they should cycle on speacially made pavements for the mass cycling event so it will not cause any traffic jams.

Wordbank Review ( WEEK 1)

News Review:
1) Ex-PAP branch treasurer, Peter Lee Yoke Leong, has been jailed for embezzling more than $78,000. He was supposed to bank in the money into the Kampong Ubi-Kembangan account, but he pocketed the money instead.

I think that he should not have done that because it was not honest of him to do that and furthermore, he was a PAP member too. By doing this, he had betrayed the members of PAP. He should have bank in the money and be honest, by doing that, he will not get jailed. This crime had affected me, my family and my community as we had lost our trust between Peter Lee and us for being PAP's branch treasurer. I think he should be jailed as embezzling is against the law.

2) World News: Ottawa
More than 1,ooo students at Toronto School were locked in their classrooms on Tuesday as scores of police searched for an assailant who stabbed a 16 year old boy. Fortunately, the boy survived by the help of his classmates who managed to call the ambulance in time.

I think it was wrong for the assailant to stab the young boy as it may kill him. The assailant should have not resort to violence and calmly talk things out if there is a fight happening between the young boy and him. Meanwhile, the young boy's classmates had done the right thing by helping to call the ambulance. By doing this, they had saved the young boy's life.

Robbery!

"Time to relax with some music!" I said to myself, whipping out my handphone from my bag and turning on my favourite song to full blast. It was a long walk home after my tuition and it was late at night.

Grooving to the music while closing my eyes, I was enjoying the music running through my ears when suddenly a masked man appeared and violently snatched my handphone. I was terrified. "H..Hey!" I shouted. I gave chase, running as fast as my legs could carry me. "Stop!!! Stop!!!"I bellowed. The theft was as quick as a cheetah. I struggled to lessen the gap.

My lungs burned as if pleading me to stop but I was unrelenting. The thought of wanting my handphone back made me more determined. We ran helter-skelter, no holds barred towards Street 23, where my house is located. "Stop!!!" I screamed. As we ran pass my house I saw my sister staring at me puzzled. "Call the police!" I shouted. My sister ran into the house. I continued chasing the robber.

We ran to a dark alley and into a dead end. The robber turn around and said, "Wow, you are so determined to catch me...But you will never because I'm going to kill you! Muahahahaha!" He took out a knife and brandished it infront of my face. I was quivering like a leaf.

"Freeze! This is the police!" someone shouted behind me. I was relieved. One of the policeman ran towards the robber and kicked the robber on his knee, he felled to the ground, covering his knee with his hands, dropping my handphone. I caught it and cleaned it with my shirt. "Yay!" I exclaimed. The police handcuffed the robber and took him to the police station. My sister came and said, "I guess someone owes me a lunch treat!" "Okay! Thank you so much!" I said hugging my sister tightly. "Let's go home!" my sister said pulling my hand.
